Tibetans....another way to look at medicine!!!

Today fifty of us women went to the doctor and the other thirty-five to the Tibetan Institute of Medicine and Astrology. We had been told to collect a morning urine sample and so we took our urine in water bottles and got on the bus up the mountain to the appointment. With my western mind I was thinking how they were going to analyze the sample if the bottles were not sterile besides the fact that the samples were from the early morning and the appointment was in the afternoon.

The doctor wasn't expecting so many women so twenty-five of us entered and the rest took a tour of the astrology offices and the museum with all the medicinal plants they use, until we were advised that other doctors had arrived. The building gives the appearance of being from the forties or fifties; a lot of books and very simple surroundings. We waited our turn to see the doctor.

When my turn came I entered with my bottle, sat down and waited for the doctor, a forty-something smiling Tibetan woman, to analyze the sample which she did with absolute certainty. The analysis I dedicate to Dr. Espitia (my son) and Dr. McNew (a friend). The doctor lifted the bottle and shook it about three times and carefully examined it with her clinical eyes. That's it! Ha!

Then she took my pulse, beg your pardon, the three pulses that I am familiar with from traditional Chinese medicine and noticed with interest the movement of my internal organs. She asked me two or three questions while she discreetly smelled me and then gave me a prescription, in my case for lower back and kidney pain: exactly my case!

It is interesting that I can take the medicine for a month and if I think it is beneficial I can continue the treatment for five months, requesting the medicine by Internet. The appointment cost me 700 rupees (about US$18), some of the other women paid nothing if they didn't need any medicine at that time. A donation may be given for the consult. After paying I went to the pharmacy. There, three happy Tibetans were packaging the medicine. They have a good system of sorting the pills by size, falling through the holes in the sorter and then directly into a bag (very hygienic).

Then we got together in the dining room and they invited us to tea and cookies. Afterwards we went to the patio and received the traditional white scarf and did the Dances of Universal Peace with the community of the Institute. Children from the school accompanied us and played nearby. It was a beautiful meeting and we returned down the narrow road singing to Tara. We ate and prepared for the next day... we are going to dance at 7:00 a.m. for the lamas. Another experience, learning more every day,

Tibetans....otra cara de la medicina!!!!
Hoy fuimos cincuenta mujeres al medico y otras al Astrologo al Instituto Tibetano de Medicina y Astrologia. Habiamos tenido la instruccion de recolectar la primera orina de la manana. En improvisadas botellas de agua colectamos nuestra orina y asi fuimos en las busetas montana arriba a nuestra cita. Yo iba pensando con mi mente occidental como iban a analizar esa muestra si los frascos no estaban esteriles ademas de que la habiamos recojido en la manana y la cita era en la tarde.......bueno, el caso es que llegamos y la directora se sorprendio de vernos pues no esperaban mas de veinticinco.

Asi que las primeras 25 entraron y las otras nos fuimos de tour a la oficina de los astrologos, el museo donde estan todas las plantas medicinales que usan y sus comentarios, hasta que nos avisaron que ya habia llegado otros dos doctores. El edificio da la sensacion como de estar en los anos cuarenta o cincuenta; muchos libros y simplicidad. En respetuoso turno esperamos pasar al doctor.

Cuando llego mi turno entre con mi botella, me sente y fue lo primero que analizo la doctora: una preciosa tibetana mas o menos creo, de cuarenta anos sonriente y con una seguridad absoluta. El analisis de la orina va dedicado a los doctores Mc.New y Espitia...... levanto la botella la sacudio y la examino cuidadosamente mas o menos tres veces con sus ojos clinicos. That's it! JA! Luego me tomo el pulso, perdon, los tres pulsos que conozco por medicina tradicional china y percibio con atento interes el movimiento interno de los organos. Me hizo dos o tres preguntas mientras discretamente me olio y luego me dio la formula: en mi caso para el dolor bajo de espalda y los rinones.... acerto!!!!

Lo interesante es que la medicina es para un mes y si siento que me sirve la puedo pedir por internet y ellos la envian para que continue el tratamiento por cinco meses, A mi me costo la modica suma de 700 rupias ( mas o menos $18) a otras nada, pues les dijo que no necesitaban medicina en este momento. El siguiente paseo es a la caja a pagar la medicina y luego a la farmacia; estan tres tibetanos joviales atendiendote y empacando la medicina; tienen un sistema buenisimo: es como un recogedor que tiene los huecos donde se adaptan las pepas grandes asi no tienen que contar y las transladan a una bolsa directo ( muy aseptico) El costo de la consulta es por donacion.

Despues nos reunimos en el comedor y nos invitaron a te y galletas y despues salimos al patio pasando por el riguroso saludo recibiendo la bufanda blanca tradicional e hicimos Danzas de Paz Universal con la comunidad del Instituto y los alrededores; mucho ninos de la escuela que esta en el mismo lugar nos acompanaron y jugaron alrededor nuestro. Fue un bello encuentro y bajamos cantando a Tara, un poco distrayendo cierto temor de la cuesta en la estrecha carretera.. Llegamos a comer y a preparar el atuendo para manana que vamos a danzar el mandala para los lamas. Saldremos a las 7:a.m. Bueno, pues otra experiencia mas.....aprendiendo a la lata.
